‘Tools for Parenting Adolescents’available

WOOSTER — A program called “Under Construction: Tools for Parenting Adolescents,” will be presented on Nov. 1, 6:30 p.m., in the large conference room at the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster by Anazao and Wayne County Family and Children First Council.

Dr. Shellie Russell, a pediatrician with Akron Children’s Hospital, will spend about 30 minutes talking about the adolescent brain and how it changes from early teen years into early adulthood. The parents/?caregivers in attendance will then be able to choose between the following topics related to adolescence and join the table for a conversation with a professional expert in the subject and a parent who has survived raising an adolescent. The topics are: 1.Transitioning to adulthood with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) 2.Sexuality 3.Hygiene 4.Mental Health with a focus on anxiety and depression 5.Substance Use 6.Continued conversation about the adolescent brain with Dr. Russell.

Program to be about Civil War spy

SMITVHILLE — The Smithville Community Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at the historic Church of God at 147 N. Milton St. in Smithville.

In the business meeting, members will discuss the upcoming Christmas in the Village and the events held with it. They also will be preparing for elections of officers.

Program for the evening will be “Emma The Spy, Hidden in Plain View” by Kathy Kraus, a retired Medina school teacher.

Sara Emma Edmonds was a woman of many disguises to aid the Union Army during the Civil War. She enlisted in the Union Army in Michigan as a man, to escape a pre-arranged marriage. Edmonds would pose as a soldier, a slave, an Irish peddler woman and a Kentucky gentleman to name a few.

She was born in December, 1841 in Canada but moved to Michigan and enlisted at Detroit on May 25, 1861. It was not known until 20 years later the truth of her identity, Congress declared Edmonds a combat soldier of the Civil War and granted her a pension. She wrote her autobiography of her adventures during the Civil War, “Nurse and Spy in the Union Army,” with the proceeds from the book going to the Christian and Sanitary Commissions, a soldier’s aid society.

Edmonds is the only woman to have received the GAR bronze star on her grave in Huston Texas and was buried with full military honors.

Alzheimer’s Association honors family caregivers month

WOOSTER — The Greater East Ohio Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is honoring national family caregiver month (November) by hosting a community forum on Thursday, Nov. 8 (6-8 p.m.) at Wooster High School, to bring together community leaders and families affected by the disease with dedicated staff and volunteers, opening conversations in an effort to bolster resources, programs and services to support families in their communities.

“Too often we hear from caregivers, ‘I wish I’d known these resources were available sooner,’” said Karen Elliott, MA, LSW, program director with the Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, in a news release. “We need community leaders and volunteers to expand that reach and awareness.”

Waynedale Veterans Day Assembly and Luncheon is Nov. 8
