DAR to lay wreaths on veterans' graves Saturday

Moultrie Observer - 12/13/2018

Dec. 13--MOULTRIE, Ga. -- John Benning DAR will join with Wreaths Across America (WAA) to lay wreaths on the graves of veterans across the country on Saturday, Dec. 15, beginning at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens on South Main Street.

More than 1,200 locations in all 50 states and overseas will be laying wreaths at this time. The local DAR chapter collected sponsorships for more than 180 wreaths.

According to Susan Turner, DAR Service to Veterans chair and coordinator of this project, "This is the first time this event has been held in Moultrie and we are overwhelmed by the support of the community. But then, this community has always supported our veterans."

First Baptist Pastor Wayne Woods, who served as a pilot in the U. S. Navy, will open the ceremony with prayer. Veterans from the five branches of the military will place wreaths at the granite markers representing each of the five branches. Veterans laying wreaths include Meg Bishop, U.S. Army, assistant principal at Cox Elementary; Dr. Rob Bartosh, U.S. Navy, orthopedic surgeon; Andrew Christensen, U.S. Air Force, director of the Colquitt County Food Bank; and Art Ellis, U. S. Marines, retired FBI agent.

Once the service wreaths have been placed, volunteers will be invited to assist in placing wreaths on the graves in the military section and other veterans' graves that have been marked in Pinecrest. Wreaths may be placed on veterans' graves in other cemeteries but the donor must pick up the wreath after the ceremony on Dec. 15 and be responsible for placing the wreath.

Wreaths will also be placed at the Eternal Flame on the Colquitt County Courthouse square remembering those who were killed in action.

This annual event seeks to further the WAA mission of Remember, Honor, Teach, ensuring that the memory of those who served our country endures.
