Resident honored with veteran award

Glendale News-Press (CA) - 7/5/2015

July 04--Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) honored Staff Sgt. Gerald Collins, a veteran from both the U.S. Army and California National Guard, as Veteran of the Year for the 43rd Assembly district during the 2015 Assembly Veterans Recognition Luncheon last week.

Gatto flew Collins, a La Crescenta resident and community leader on veteran's issues, to Sacramento to receive the honor.

"Gerry is the type of leader we all hope to have living in our community," Gatto said in a statement. "He personifies the values of selflessness and commitment to service, the hallmark traits of a United States military veteran."

Collins' military service began in 1964, when he joined the California National Guard's18th Armored Cavalry, which was activated during domestic disturbances. The unit was also activated as an active duty Army Unit during the Vietnam War.

After having received numerous medals and commendations for his service, Collins was honorably discharged in March 1970.

Since then, Collins has advocated for veterans throughout the community, focusing on issues such as homelessness and post-traumatic stress disorder.

A member of the Elks Club and previous chair of its veterans committee, Collins is a volunteer with the American Legion and former commander of Post 288 in La Crescenta.
