BRIEF: Korean War armistice to be observed at Saturday event in Olympia

July 23--The public is invited to the annual wreathlaying ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday (July 23) to commemorate the Korean War Armistice's 63rd anniversary.

Veterans of the Korean War will gather at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the east side of the Capitol Campus in Olympia for the event.

The ceremony will involve Consul General Mook Duk-ho, from the Korean Consulate in Seattle; Col. Omar Jones, deputy commander for operations in the 7th Infantry Division; Retired Army Major Gen. John Hemphill, and Aflie Alvarado-Ramos, director of the state Department of Veterans Affairs.

The national anthem and TAPS will be performed by the 1st Corps Army Band and the invocation will be provided by the Rev. Francis Jeffery.

The Korean War, known as the "Forgotten War," took place June 1950 to July 1953. More than 36,000 Americans died during the war, 103,000 were wounded, and 8,177 were listed as missing in action. More than 5 million Americans served in the war.
