HCVWoH Committee seeking names of veterans

The Northeast Georgian - 12/8/2017

The Habersham County Veterans Wall of Honor Committee is asking any veterans who have not turned in copies of their discharge papers from the armed forces to do so as soon as possible.

The deadline for submissions is Dec. 22 for any veteran who wishes to have his or her name engraved in the fourth wall at the HCVWoH, located beside the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce, Cornelia.

According to the HCVWoH Committee Chairman Larry Whitfield, the fourth wall will be erected in spring 2018.

Whitfield said the HCVWoH is for all who have served in the United States Armed Forces during wartime or peacetime and is not for war veterans only.

"The Wall of Honor is for those who are Habersham County natives, or those who reside in the county and have proof of service, honorable discharge or DD 214," he said. "The Wall of Honor is for all veterans who have served and sacrificed to give us the freedom we enjoy today."

Whitfield said the paperwork may be dropped off at either Whitfield Funeral Home location ? Baldwin or Demorest, or may be mailed to the Habersham County Veterans Wall of Honor, P.O. Box 298, Demorest, GA 30535. They may also be emailed to jlarrywhit@windstream.net.

"The Pinto Bean Supper that was held on Nov. 10 at the Grant-Reeves VFW Post [7720] was a huge success," Whitfield said. "We raised more than $8,000. This provides us with funds to complete the fourth wall, plus we will have funds for enhancement projects, such as landscaping and paving the parking lot."

He also thanked the Habersham Electric Membership Corp.(HEMC) for its charitable contribution of $1,000. Also to make a donation was Habersham County Chamber of Commerce, which presented the HCVWoH with a $3,000 check.

A check presentation was held Nov. 29 at the Habersham County Veterans Wall of Honor monument, where the chamber awarded the donation to the HCVWoH. Whitfield was present to accept the check. The proceeds were raised from the Habersham Freedom run.

Collectively, Whitfield said the total is about $12,000. The extra funding will not only help to erect the fourth wall, but will also be utilized for other projects to enhance the monument as well.

Whitfield said the HCVWoH Committee sincerely thanks the people of Habersham County for supporting this project and helping to raise the necessary funds to see it completed.
